SEND IN YOUR PRODUCT REVIEWS, HELP SOMEBODY SAVE A BUCK AND FIND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT EQUIPMENT WORKS AND WHAT YOU NEED TO AVOID.

Here's how it's going to work.  I will rate equipment that I have used through a RIGOROUS field testing environment.  I'm giving you my honest feedback about the product/equipment's overall effectiveness.  Statistics and things that don't matter will be kept to a minimum.  What I am trying to do is establish the fishing equipment that is suited to take on the challenge of mine and your needs.  There are two reasons I have decided to undertake the task of rating tons of fishing-related equipment:

1)  As an all around guide for the fisherman who is going to spend a hard-earned dollar on fishing gear, and;

2) So many companies these days are cutting corners to lower costs that they've reduced the effectiveness, usability, and durability of their products, yet they still advertise them to be as effective as ever.  NOT THE TRUTH.  I'm personally sick and tired of not getting what I pay for and this is my SINK OR SWIM Product Review.  Read it and weep.

COMMENTARY:

2003 MINN KOTA AUTO PILOT 65 LB THRUST

This 24 volt troller has plenty of kick for most boats chasing stripes these days.  Only if you have a boat bigger than 25 feet, get something more powerful.

This motor has been a big disappointment for me.  The very first day out, the Auto Pilot did it's ever-so-infamous 'ballerina pirouette.'  Spinning out of control, tossing my 6 planer boards into extreme disarray.  This negative feature is extremely undesirable, especially while fishing solo trying to land a fish.

Besides the Auto Pilot rendering itself a $200 feature that is completely useless, the motor has performed flawlessly as long as you can keep the stock model controller in a sterile environment.  It seems if you get a speck of dirt on the controller, it will quit operating properly.

While there are aftermarket controllers out there which are HUGE improvements to the foot-paddle, I recommend the addition of the new remote-wireless Co-Pilot also made by Minn Kota.  It is well worth the $150 price tag.  I have had nearly flawless use out of my Co-Pilot for about a year of heavy use.  Still haven't had to replace the remote battery, either.

The Skinny:

Positives: Good power.  Will troll all day on a full charge.  Good head-turn speed compared to older models.  Very easy installation.

Neutrals: Replace the controller as soon as you buy a new motor.

Negatives: Good luck with the Auto-Pilot.  It is truly a hit-or-miss, pick-of-the-litter option.  They can't even fix it through warranty repair.

OVERALL:  Good motor and power.  Auto Pilot feature useless to me.

Minn Kota Power Drive models:

Identical to the Auto Pilot, but cheaper due to the lack of the worthless Auto-Pilot feature.  If I could redo the past, I would not pay extra for Auto-Pilot for sanity's sake.

Minn Kota CO-Pilot:

A must-have add on to Auto-Pilot and Power Drive motors for everybody.  Cost is irrelevant compared to the function of this unit.  Buy one for sure.
